Ride Leader: Sue (and Curt) Pratt

Miles: 140

An unusual thing for most clubs is usually not unusual for 124 Starriders.  Such was the case with our August club ride!  The ride leader, Sue, drove a convertible - yes, a 4 wheeler to lead the ride.  We had a clever course to make an ordinary trip to Chapin into a great ride in the country.

The day started out with bad luck for Curt; Cajun was going to ride the Valk to keep it fresh.  Oh crap!  Dead battery!  Slap the charger on and head out to the starting place.

We had 11 bikes for this ride.  Passengers included children and grandchildren of several Starriders.  We were unsure what the greyhound benefit was all about but sure that the day might involve getting lost at least a few times.

The first leg was a quick jaunt down roads unfamiliar to nearly all the riders.

Oops; Curt missed calling a turn so, Sue and the group had to turn around (can you tell where this is headed?).

Just 5 miles down this road and Curt told Sue to bear left:

Oops again, it’s the wrong road but Curt says no problem Sue - we can take this and get back to where we need to be.  A very short ride on this plan 'B' road and:

oh crap, a 3rd "OOPS" in 12 miles; the road ended and became a dirt road.  Turn around again!!

We got back on track and finally rolled into our first stop.  Curt took heat for the 'great day' he was having.  Sue remained cool with it all.

The second leg was a long stretch of really nice road that very few, if any, knew was even there.  We took our second break and the heat was beginning to bear down on us and shade was hard to find.

For the 3rd and final leg we were going to navigate around the edges of Lake Murray to wind up in Chapin, a stone's throw from our objective.  Well, Curt missed a couple of road signs and tried to navigate out of it; until the "Road Ends" sign:

OOPS number 4!  Everyone turn around!

The greyhound benefit was run by people dedicated to rescue of greyhounds bred to race but no longer used for racing.  They are great companion dogs, smart, and well behaved.  There were 2 dogs there and they were excellent, even with all the people and noise.

After the day we'd had, Scott led us to a Carvel in Lexington (yes, Carvel).  Curt finally had small reprieve when Scott executed the popular turn around.  The ice cream was so good and so bad for you - what a combo!

Thanks to all the Starriders who shared their day with us.  We had a ball today.
