The Rumblings

NEWSLETTER FOR STAR RIDERS COLUMBIA, SC

CHAPTER #124 July 19, 2004

Vice President Rick Floyd opened the meeting and thanked everyone for coming, and informed the group that President Jim Woods was out of town this week.  He asked that all regular members get to know our new comers and visitors.

We had 60 people present at the meeting including 6 visitors, Patrick Valentie, David Banks, Brian Buff, Donald Sills and Ron and Cathy Abrams.  The drawing this month was $185.00 so $92.50 went to our lucky winners Beth and Danny Donahue. Congratulations Beth and Danny!  We also had two T-shirts from Cycleworld to give away and the lucky winners were:  Patrick Valentie and Betsy Gooch.

Congratulations Patrick and Betsy.

Gerri Woods said there are still some Star Rider shirts available, if interested get with her after the meeting tonight.

George Parsons asked that you watch the website for posting on the August rides.  He has had a few more people volunteer to lead rides next year but could still use more.  If you are interested in leading a ride, please contact George at gsparsons@sc.rr.com .

Jim Berkley reminded us of the ride this weekend to Waynesville, NC.  Please meet at the Kmart parking lot in Lexington ready to pull out on Friday July 23 at 10:00 a.m.  If you need more information about the trip, please contact Jim.  (berkles1946@hotmail.com )

Larry reminded everyone about the importance of using a sun block while riding.  He said that your lips are the tenderest part of your face and the sun can cause skin cancer.  Please use protection with a proper UV rating.

The Christmas party is set for December 13 in the fellowship hall of Bethel United Methodist Church on Highway 321 in Blythewood.  We will start a sign up sheet and collecting for the meal in the August meeting.  We are collecting ahead of time this year because of loss that was encountered last year with people registering and not showing up.

David Smith informed us that he had been in touch with the State Highway Patrol regarding the discussion of LED lights on motorcycles.  Due to conflicts the officer could not be at the July meeting but plans to attend the August meeting and talk with us about this issue.  Please have your questions ready!

David also mentioned about some jumper cables that were available at most Cracker Barrels for $7.00 and were compact enough to carry in the motorcycle. Cajun reminded us that we should not try to jump a motorcycle off from a car, only another motorcycle.   David also read some, “Things You Should Already Know” about riding which were too numerous to put into the minutes.  However if you are interested in these quotes I will be glad to make you a copy.

If anyone has tips that they think is note worthy, please put them on the message board.

This will be an unescorted ride around Lake Murray.  Signs will be posted at turns and maps will be provided.  First group of riders out at 12:30.  There will be a series of bike Nights leading up to this ride and you will be able to pre-register at those bike nights.    For more information contact Irving Albrecht 264-1591 (office) or 479-0631 (cell).

Rick Floyd said there has been a lot of discussion regarding our club meeting location on the message board and the officers will be going to different locations and checking out the possibility of our club meeting there.  If you are serious about this and want to be a part of this endeavor, please email Rick Floyd at brfloyd74@msn.com and one of the officers will let you know when and where they will be going.

Camp Kemo is a camp for children with cancer.  This is held at Camp Kinard out off I-20 and exit 44 towards Aiken.  Each year they have a motorcycle day in which they ask riders to come out and ride the children around a trail.  This event goes on most all day but you can come and go as you have the time to ride the children.  The date is July 29th and you will be blessed beyond your wildest imagination.  Please try to come, even if you don’t feel like you can ride the children on your bike you can help get them on and off the bikes and help to put helmets on them

Johnny and Judy Frick and Susan and Tato Martinez will be heading to Star Days in Virginia this week.  Have a great time you guys!!

Vera Hanna mentioned about a camp in White Rock that could use help.  I didn’t get all the information but I’m sure Vera will be glad to fill you in.  If you would like more information please contact Vera at VH1512@aol.com.

Ride safe and we look forward to seeing you again on August 16th.
