The Rumblings

NEWSLETTER FOR STAR RIDERS COLUMBIA, SC
CHAPTER #124 March 20, 2006

Happy St. Patrick's to everyone.  Our meeting began at 7:05 p.m.  Our president began by having our guests introduce themselves: Welcome to Darrell Padgett, Andy and Anne Clements, and Ron and Beverly McKnight.

Just a reminder that we have pins, patches and decals for sale.  If you are interested please contact Betsy Gooch through the message board or see her at each meeting.  She will endeavor to have them with her at each ride as well

Last Saturdays ride was to Kingstree to meet up with other state chapters and have lunch at Brown's Bar-B-Que.  Columbia had 8 members attend and Charleston brought 40 of their members.  After lunch we rode a short way down the street to Russ Marlow’s Custom Cycles.  He is currently working on his contribution to the next biker build-off.

During lunch our president spoke about the chapter and what we are currently working on in the way of our charities and fund-raisers.  Don Mabry told everyone about our goal of sending a child to Camp Kemo in June and asked for a donation of any spare change.  Amazingly, the Charleston chapter came up with a nice donation for our charities.  Now that's true Brotherhood.  Thank you again, Charleston Chapter 264.

Because of Charleston's impromptu donation, we have added a bucket to each of our meetings for your spare change.  All donations will be earmarked for the charities we have chosen to support.  And along that same line of thought, starting with our April meeting, there will be a box, bag, or bucket that will be earmarked for all material donations that you may chose to bring to the meeting.  These items will then be dispersed to the appropriate charity.  Please see the list of items requested from the charities listed on the web site.

The president then asked for a motion to present a donation to Camp Kemo's director at our next meeting to sponsor one child to go to Camp Kemo.  This motion passed and we will ask Ms Jeanne Schmidt to be present for that presentation next month.

This Saturday, March 25, 2006, will be the First Aid training that our Ladies of the Star representative, Vera Hanna, has set up for us.  The training will be held at Southern Connection Tours in Columbia (see directions on the web) at 9:30 am.  Training will last approx. 2-3 hours, after which Danny Donohue will lead us on a ride to Blythewood for lunch at the Southern Pig.  We have invited the other chapters in the state and hear that some may be attending.  A little side note to this Saturday's ride, a commercial is going to be done for the upcoming ride sponsoring Camp Kemo. (April 22, 2006)  The station filming the commercial wants to use a bike group and has asked us to wear our vest to the training so they can use us for the commercial. (This is not a guarantee that the commercial will be shot that day.  However, come prepared.)

Saturday, April 8, George Parsons is leading a ride for Sister Care.  They have asked if we could please provide at least 21 Easter Baskets for the children.  Many have already agreed to supply 1-2 baskets each.  Please do not hesitate to bring one; I'm sure that there will never be too many.  George will post the specifics of the ride soon on the web.  If the weather is not conducive to a ride he will post the location for the drop off of the baskets.  Even if we cannot have a ride, Sister Care still needs the baskets, please don't let these children down, bring your baskets.  If you are unable to meet at the drop off, please contact George Gooch and he will make arrangements to pick them up.  Because the baskets will wait a week before being presented to the children, don't use perishable items.  The children are youth to preteen in age.  Thank you in advance for your support of this very worthy cause.

We voted on the location and caterer for this year’s Christmas Party, and asked for help with the organizing of the event.  Carol Kitchens has graciously offered to help with the Christmas arrangements.  Thank you Carol.

At the end of the meeting the Charity bucket was counted and, with the help of our Sister Chapter in Charleston, we have reached our goal to sponsor a child to Camp Kemo.  Thank you so much to all of our members and guests.

Our 50/50 was taken home by Beth Donohue with, congratulations Beth.

Respectfully submitted by,
Betsy Gooch, secretary
